Are there any precautions to take when maintaining filing cabinets?

Even with the most robust product quality, wear and tear during handling and transportation is inevitable. Neglecting routine maintenance of filing cabinets can easily lead to damage, thereby shortening their service life. So, are you aware of the key precautions for maintaining filing cabinets?

Three Key Points:

1. Regularly clean the cabinet’s exterior finish with mild soapy water to remove alkaline residues or grease stains. Rinse thoroughly with clean water, allow to air dry completely, then apply a coat of polish wax.

2.Place a small quantity of Sichuan pepper or black pepper inside the cabinet to deter rodents. Alternatively, tobacco leaves or camphor balls can be used to prevent infestation by insects and woodworm.

3. Reapply varnish or a coat of clear lacquer every few years to preserve the cabinet’s lustre and extend its lifespan.

Four Prohibitions:

1. Never expose cabinets to direct sunlight;

2. Avoid placing cabinets in excessively damp areas to prevent moisture-induced swelling, rusting over time, and potential drawer jamming;

3. When moving, avoid dragging forcefully; instead, lift and place gently. Ensure the cabinet is positioned level and stable. If the floor is uneven, pad the legs securely to prevent damage to the mortise-and-tenon joints, which could compromise stability.

4. Never overload the cabinet beyond the door’s capacity, as this may cause the doors to warp.
